Unlock the Hidden Potential of Your Samsung Phone with One UI 5.1: 6 Must-Try Features

New Battery Widget

To access the widget, long-press on an empty space on your Home screen, tap Widgets > Battery, and choose the Battery status widget. You can opt for either the circles or the list view, and resize the widget to fit up to eight devices.

 

Modes and Routines

Enhancements Modes and Routines is already a popular feature on Samsung phones, and it has become even better with the One UI 5.1 update. There are two significant improvements this time around.

First, there's a new Theater Mode preset that helps "minimize distractions from notifications and light from your screen," making it perfect for movie-goers who want to avoid disturbing others.

Secondly, there are additional routine actions, such as enabling Quick Share to send files or changing your wallpaper. You can locate these actions in the Connected devices and Wallpaper menus.

 

Quick Screenshots via the Settings Panel

Taking screenshots on Samsung devices has always been a breeze, and One UI 5.1 has made it even more convenient. You can now take a screenshot directly from the Quick Settings panel.

Customize the Quick Settings panel and add the Take screenshot button to it. Once you've added it, tapping the button will take the screenshot. You can also long-press the button to reveal screenshot settings that you may wish to change.

 

Gallery App Improvements

The Samsung Gallery app has also received a couple of improvements in One UI 5.1. The most noteworthy addition is Image Clipper, which allows you to lift a subject from a photo background, copy the cutout to your clipboard, and paste it elsewhere - similar to the iPhone. However, it's only available on flagship devices.

Samsung has also improved existing features, such as Object Eraser, which removes unwanted objects from photos, the photo remastering tool that enhances your images, and Face Effects, which lets you edit your selfies' color tone, jawline, eyes, and more.

 

Bixby Text Call

Similar to Google Pixel's Call Screen feature, the Bixby Text Call feature on Samsung phones enables the assistant to answer the call on your behalf and inquire why the caller is calling. You receive a real-time transcript of the caller's words, and Bixby reads out your replies.

Bixby Text Call was introduced in One UI 5, but it was limited to Korean. With One UI 5.1, English is now supported as well. The feature is primarily intended to deal with spam calls, but you can also use it when you're in a meeting and cannot answer the phone. You can locate the feature in the call settings menu of the Phone app.

 

Expert RAW

Integration in the Camera App Expert RAW on Samsung flagship devices is a camera feature that allows professionals and aspiring photographers to have complete control over the device's camera hardware.

It used to be a separate app, but One UI 5.1 integrates it directly into the main camera app, making it more accessible to a wider audience. You can find it in the More menu in the Camera app.
